As accountants we have 2 new year’s every year (which means double the opportunities for New Year Resolutions!!!).
It was when I was planning in June 2019 that my business coach gave me a questionnaire that changed how I set my business and personal goals. The questionnaire was about 50 questions that looked at all aspects of your life ie. Home, health, financial management and relationships.
The value of the questionnaire was that it made it clear what you needed to address to increase your scores in the various areas ie. health- if you haven’t been to the dentist then you need to book a dentist appointment etc.
So, whilst it was brilliant for setting the list of what needed to be actioned the bigger take away for me was how uneven my scores were which in turn meant I couldn’t achieve 100% success without other changes in different areas.
In business if you don’t have your health and personal life sorted this will affect the success your business will have. As a wise mentor once told me- your business can never outperform you!!!! I see this constantly when working with business owners if something is happening in their personal life even if they think the business is not affected, it always shows in the numbers.
For me the questionnaire highlighted how much I had been the hare. It would be no surprise to many I achieved 100% in financial success, 80% on relationships but not even 10% in the other areas. I had run the race to achieve the area’s that were easy (for me, this will be different for others) and then become complacent in the race of life and as was in many area’s I had stopped running.
For the last six months I have adopted the tortoise method. Slowly and steadily working on goals in my business and personal life. By improving both and having the balance it enables me to achieve more in both areas.
To achieve this, I needed to sit back and assess the whole situation. I needed to put systems and structure into the business to ensure that it was not my 100% focus. We needed to have a plan and break it down.
We see this with many clients we work with who have goals to work less but earn similar. It is achievable you just need the plan and the actions you need to take. If 2020 is the year to get your business working for you and for you to have balance why not book a planning session with Renee or myself? We can help you on the path to achieving your personal and business success!
