Last month I was lucky enough to celebrate my Nanna’s 95th Birthday!!! As I appreciate this is not something I am going to be able to do forever, it was a time to reflect on what I have learnt from my nanna which I take into my everyday business life.
My grandad died suddenly when he was 59. They had been married in their early 20’s and my nanna had moved in when married from living with her parents. From this time nanna needed to create a new life.
In her late 70’s and early 80’s Nanna took on organising Civilian Widow conferences not just for the local area but for the whole state all before the time of the internet. It was amazing as a young child to see how she went about it as if it was not something new.
The key to the success was:
- Have a list of what needs to be completed
- Do one action at a time
- There is always a solution – so if plan a doesn’t work look for a plan B i.e. if one accommodation place is booked try another
- Live in the now and not in the future. You can only control what is happening now. There is no point stressing about what might happen
In business it is important that we are aware that there is no rush or age barrier to business success. Don’t be concerned if others are older or younger just do what is right for you to be successful and set the goals that make you happy.
Set a plan and list of tasks that need to be done and stay on track with what you need to achieve. Take action just one step at a time.
If there is a chink in the chain look for a plan B and if plan B doesn’t work, there is a plan C. In every situation there is always a solution you need to just keep looking.
Finally live in the now and enjoy what you have right now. Too often we miss the connection with people and the simple joys in our business as we stress about what may or may not happen in the future. I challenge you to have that conversation with a client you haven’t spoken to for a while just because or send a hand written thank you.
