Australian Company Directors are required by law to verify their identity with the Australian Business Registry Service and obtain a Director ID. If the Corporate Registry indicates that you are a director of a company, you must complete this obligation.
To obtain a Director ID you will need to complete the identification requirements through MyGov ID. The identification process will require you to verify your identity using a combination of documents. This application will be used as the first step to authenticate your identity with the Australia Government websites. Once your identity has been confirmed the documents will be compared to the existing personal information held by the ATO.
If you were already a director on or before 31 October 2021, you have until 30 November 2022 to apply. If you are only now becoming a director, you must obtain your 15-digit identifier before you are appointed as a director of a company.
It is your responsibility to apply for your Director ID within the relevant timeframe of your situation. It is a criminal offence if you do not apply on time. ASIC is responsible for enforcing Director ID Offenses and considerable fines will apply.
Here is an extract from the ASIC website demonstrating the harsh penalties that may be levied if you haven’t applied within the correct timeframe:
