I was recently asked to represent small business on a panel at the Sunshine Coast Business Council’s Youth Prosperity Forum. The Forum met to discuss the high youth unemployment rate in the region – currently 17% – and to secure commitment from government and the business community to take responsibility for the issue.
The long term effect youth unemployment will have on our business and community is significant as many young people face the choice of either moving away from the region to find work or staying, but becoming disengaged with the community. One of the key points that was highlighted for me was that, as a business community, we need to join together to solve this issue.
The challenge I have for business owners is:
1. How do you engage with young people in our community?
2. What mentoring do you provide for young people in your business?
3. What else can you do today to help a young person find a position?
Please read this summary from the business council of the outcomes at the forum.
I look forward to reading your thoughts and experiences on this crucial matter.
